For a Virginia Tech program that needs wide receivers, Hargrave’s Justin Harper has some good news. “By Wednesday [Dec. 10th], I’m going to make my decision,” he says. “I think I’m going to commit to Virginia Tech.”
Harper, who stands 6-4, 190, and runs a 4.5 forty, told Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer and quarterbacks coach Kevin Rogers (who recruits Hargrave for VT) the news today at the Hargrave combine.
“I already talked to my grandparents, and they feel good about it. Virginia Tech’s a great school. All the schools are great, but me and [Hargrave QB and VT signee] Cory [Holt] have been through the rough times here, so we’re going to continue together at Virginia Tech.
Harper’s commitment isn’t yet official, but he will make it so on Wednesday. “Everybody knows. Wednesday is going to be the day that I make it official.”
Harper’s reasons were, among other things, his chances for playing time, and his friendship with Holt. “It’s a great situation with Ernest Wilford graduating, and me and Cory have really connected this year.”
Harper, who signed a basketball scholarship with Winthrop coming out of high school but failed to qualify and decided to attend prep school, reports, “I’m qualified, and Virginia Tech has my transcripts. I came to Hargrave to get qualified, and that’s what I did.”
He will enroll at Virginia Tech in January, along with Holt, and he thinks he can play early, but he knows it’s an uphill battle. “I’m hoping to. I know I have to work hard, because nothing comes easy, and the players there are already a year ahead of me.”
Asked if he was going to take any more recruiting visits, Harper said no. He was at VT this past weekend for a day and reported, “It was great. We only stayed one day, but I had a chance to go to Coach Beamer’s house and have dinner, and I like Blacksburg.”
Look for Justin Harper to make it official this Wednesday that he’s going to VT next month.
