Eastern Regional (Voorhees, NJ) offensive tackle Phil Trautwein did make his official visit to the University of Tennessee last weekend. The night before, he helped Eastern defeat Cherokee 50-43 in double overtime to earn a spot in the South, Group 4 State Championship game.

Despite not receiving too much sleep the night before, Trautwein managed to have an excellent time on his official visit.

“It was still nice,” Trautwein said of his visit. “I’d probably rate it a 10. I saw the Vol Walk, and that was amazing. I found out that life is all about football in Knoxville. It was a great atmosphere. There were 101,000 fans there, which was the smallest crowd since 1995.”

Trautwein was hosted by sophomore offensive tackle Richie Gandy. Tennessee, along with every other school, is recruiting Trautwein to play offensive tackle in college.

In addition to learning about the football atmosphere, he also learned about Tennessee’s academic environment as well.

“The big question I wanted answered at Tennessee was about their academics,” Trautwein said. “I definitely learned that they care about academics. They only have a 45% graduation rate, but a lot of that’s because they lose a lot of players to the NFL early. This year, all of the seniors are graduating.”

Following an excellent visit, Trautwein now lists the Vols along with Michigan State as his two favorite schools.

“They are tied with Michigan State now,” Trautwein said of Tennessee. “I love how people loved football at both places. They are both above Boston College right now. I didn’t get the sense that people cared as much about football at Boston College as they do at the other two places.”

Trautwein has now taken three of his allotted five official visits. He is going to make his final two, with four schools being at the forefront.

“Yeah I’m going to make the final two visits,” Trautwein said. “It’s probably between Virginia, Virginia Tech, Maryland, and Rutgers. I am probably going to the Virginia Tech at Virginia game this weekend. That will help me determine whether or not I want to make an official visit to Virginia.

“Right now, the only thing I’m thinking about is winning the state championship.
