Lake Taylor (Norfolk, VA) linebacker/running back Purnell Sturdivant is close to setting up his first official visit, which will be to Virginia Tech.

“I just got off the phone with the Virginia Tech coaches,” said Sturdivant in an interview last night. “We are trying to set up an official visit there for the first weekend in December – December 5th. It’s not final yet though.”

The Hokies remain the leader for Sturdivant, who noted Syracuse and Clemson as two other schools heavily pursuing him above the rest. NC State, Tennessee, and Michigan are other programs showing interest.

“Yep, Virginia Tech is still my leader,” said Sturdivant. “I just like the program, the academics, and how they are winning right now. I really like how they communicate with players. They lead, but I want to take all five [official] visits.”

Sturdivant, who has scholarship offers from Virginia Tech, Syracuse, Clemson, and Maryland, is being recruited for many positions on the next level. Virginia Tech mentioned him playing rover, linebacker, or running back. Clemson and Syracuse like him as a linebacker or strong safety.

On the field, Sturdivant has led Lake Taylor (8-1, 6-1 in District) to a second straight playoff appearance and a share of the Eastern District title. They end the regular season this Friday against Indian River, but Lake Taylor has already secured a playoff spot.

Through nine games, Sturdivant has rushed for over 1,200 yards on 147 carries. He rushed for 146 yards on 27 carries in a thrilling 26-22 victory over Wilson last Friday.

Track Star

In addition to football, Purnell stars in track-and-field for Lake Taylor. He runs the 100, 200, 4 X 100 relay, and participates in the Long Jump and Shot-put as well.

On the track, he uses shoes from an American track icon. You can’t miss Purnell if you see a Lake Taylor track meet.

“Last year I wore the Michael Johnson gold shoes,” said Sturdivant with a laugh. “This year, I’m thinking about going with silver. I will do track after football is up. It’s relaxing to me.”

In terms of football speed, Sturdivant runs a 4.4 in the 40 yard dash. It’s this speed combined with his strength and skill that make him such an attractive prospect.
