DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) star Derrick McPhearson, one of the most coveted wide receiver prospects in the East, has set up four official visits.
“I’ve set up four visits, to Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, Maryland, and Florida,” said McPhearson. “Pittsburgh is on December 6th, Maryland is on December 13th, Florida is on December 20th, and I’m not sure when Virginia Tech is…they are somewhere around there – I believe they are in December. Those four are locked in, and I’m deciding on my fifth. I’m weighing my options, but right now I’m looking at Michigan, Miami, and Ohio State.”
McPhearson, who is 6-0, 185 pounds, has been clocked at a blazing 4.38 in the 40 yard dash. He has received scholarship offers from all of the above schools except for Miami.
Narrowing down his list has been a tough process, however he feels comfortable with his decision.
“The reasons I liked those four are the same for all of them,” said McPhearson. “They all offer great football with high academics. As for the location and the type of atmosphere, I’ll have to wait and see those on my official visits.”
McPhearson wants to keep an open mind towards each program before his official visits, therefore he does not want to name any favorites.
“Everybody is fair game right now,” said McPhearson. “I’m not making any visits. I’ll take my visits and go where I feel the most comfortable. I need to feel comfortable with where I’m going to go, and that’s the biggest factor. I want to take all of my visits, and then give myself time to think about my visits and decide where I want to go. I have time on my side, so I might as well use it.”
Location does not matter to McPhearson, as he feels his family will support him in whatever choice he makes.
“My family is so supportive that they will be behind me wherever I go,” said McPhearson. “I’m sure my Mom would want me to stay closer to home, but in the end, I know they just want me to be happy with my decision.”
Before making his visits, McPhearson hopes to lead his team to a championship crown. Currently, DeMatha is ranked #21 in the USA Today Super 25 National HS football rankings with an 9-0 record. In a 42-7 win last Saturday over McNamara, McPhearson made six catches for 185 yards.
