Montgomery Bell Academy (TN) tight end Tom Santi committed to Virginia last night, choosing the Cavaliers over offers from LSU, Tennessee, and Iowa. According to MBA Head Coach Jeff Rutledge, Tom liked everything about the program.
“He did commit to Virginia,” said Rutledge. “He loved Coach Groh and the staff that he has. He took his official visit this past weekend, and he loved the campus. He loved the academics and feels good about where the program is going. They use the tight end a lot, and he liked that as well.”
Coach Rutledge initiated the contacted between UVA and Santi.
“I spoke with all of our players, including Tom, about what their interests were in a school,” said Rutledge. “Tom said UVA would be a school he would be interested in. I said I knew Coach Groh and so I made a call. We sent a tape up and they liked what they saw. Andy Heck came out to watch him play and they offered shortly after that.”
Santi is 6-5, 220 pounds and runs a 4.55 in the 40 yard dash. He will put on some weight once he gets into college to become a more prototypical tight end, however with his speed and athleticism he has the versatility to line up all over the field on offense.
More to follow later with comments from Tom on his commitment to Virginia. He became the ninth player to commit for the 2004 class.
