Virginia’s 2005 class is starting to catch up with the 2004 class. The Cavaliers received a commitment from 6-5, 190 pound junior wide receiver/outside linebacker Maurice Covington of Southern Durham High School in Durham, NC.

Covington, who was recruited by Ron Prince, joins Gretna (VA) quarterback Vic Hall as the second junior to commit to Virginia. He chose the Cavaliers over interest from many ACC and SEC programs.

“Maurice committed to Virginia,” said Southern Head Coach Gordon Walters. “He can fly…he’s got the whole package. He’s played on a defense that has not allowed an offensive touchdown in six games and has five shutouts [in seven games this season]. [On offense] We don’t throw the ball that much, but he’s had 10 touchdowns in the past [season and a half] in about 27 attempts.”

It is not known which position the Cavaliers are looking for him to play. Depending on his development, Covington could play a number of different positions on the next level. An excellent athlete, he possesses a 32″ vertical leap and runs a 4.5 in the 40 yard dash.
