Outstanding DeMatha Catholic (MD) wide receiver prospect Derrick McPhearson is hearing from schools up and down the East coast. He has received offers from top programs such as Florida, Maryland, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, Michigan, and Boston College.
Another top school has recently entered the picture for the 6-0, 185 pound speedster and is under consideration for one of his five official visits.
“Coaches are calling all the time,” said McPhearson. “Miami (FL) called me earlier this week and they are recruiting me now. They are new to my list. I’ve set one official visit – to Maryland for December 12th. I want to set up the other four very soon, but I’m not sure who they will be.”
Virginia Tech remains heavily in the running, as McPhearson has developed a good relationship with Coach Billy Hite.
“Virginia Tech is a great school,” said McPhearson. “I just spoke with Billy Hite two days ago. He’s a great guy. Virginia Tech is definitely one of the bigger schools on my list.”
There are no favorites at this point. McPhearson wants to make all of his visits and decide from those experiences.
“I don’t have any favorites,” said McPhearson. “It’s hard to like a school when you haven’t ever seen it. That’s why I want to take all of my visits and see what each school has to offer. I’m definitely taking all five visits. I don’t plan on committing on, say, my third visit because I want to give myself a chance to see all of my options. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity – I want to take it slow.”
DeMatha is 4-0 heading into this weekend. As a senior, McPhearson tries to be there for the younger players on their way up in the program.
He is setting a great example on and off the field.
“For the guys who look up to me, I just try and be a leader to them,” said McPhearson. “I treat them like they are my close friends and try to be there for them.”
Derrick McPhearson vs Doug Dutch
DeMatha faced Gonzaga in a matchup of two of the top wide receiver prospects in the country. McPhearson got the better of Dutch, as DeMatha captured a 17-0 victory. Derrick caught six passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns in the win.
“[Playing against Doug] did pump me up,” said McPhearson. “He...
