Montgomery Bell Academy (Nashville, TN) prospect Tom Santi fits the bill of the “new” tight end – one that is big, athletic, and very capable of being a top receiver for any club.
As a junior, Santi made 46 receptions for 650 yards and 12 touchdowns. He hopes to improve on those numbers this year for Montgomery Bell Head Coach Jeff Rutledge.
“Tom is 6-4 1/2, or maybe 6-5, weighs 225 pounds and runs a 4.55 in the 40,” said Coach Jeff Rutledge. “He really stretches the defense and is a big weapon for us. Any time he’s not on the field we really miss him.”
Colleges have taken notice. Santi, who carries a 4.0 GPA, has received offers from many schools including Iowa, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Colorado, and LSU. Virginia, Stanford, Miami (FL), and Mississippi are heavily recruiting him.
Santi has taken one official visit to Iowa last weekend, and has set another to Virginia for the weekend of November 29th.
His first official visit was a postive one.
“I really enjoyed my visit to Iowa,” said Santi. “They treat you like royalty. Other than being treated like a VIP, it was really neat to see how the fans are there. They live and die by the Hawkeyes.”
Virginia will host Santi for the Virginia Tech game, and he is looking forward to it. He lists no favorites at this point but indicated that the Cavs are high on his list.
“Virginia is pretty close to the top,” said Santi. “I’m pretty much open to everyone and haven’t really narrowed anything, but I really like Virginia. Every person I talk to has great things to say about the Virginia staff. Most of the time only a few coaches say good things about another program, but everyone says good things about Virginia. I love talking to Coach Ross and Coach Heck – those are probably two of my favorite guys to talk to. There are similarities between my high school and UVA, and they are a prestigous academic institution.”
The Cavs have not offered Santi, but he expects them to in the future.
“I think they are waiting to offer me on my official visit,” said Santi. “I’m excited about the trip.”
Santi is unsure if he will take all five official visits, but did mention some other schools that may be in the running.
“Nobody’s been eliminated,” said Santi. “There’s also Miami (FL), Tennessee, and LSU just offered so they are there. I know I at least want to...
