Salem (Salem, VA) linebacker Austin Casey is enjoying a 3-1 start to the 2003 season. Hard work during the off-season has helped him become a stronger and tougher middle linebacker for head coach Willis White.
During the off-season, Casey would work-out before school and after school. He continues to work out before school while being a terror to opposing offenses on Friday nights.
As Salem’s best defender, Casey often draws two blockers for the majority of the game.
“If a team doesn’t throw two blockers my way, I am going to have a pretty good night,” said Casey, who can bench press 320 pounds. “I feel a lot stronger this year. When linemen hit me now, it doesn’t bother me at all.”
Casey has received phone calls from UVA, Wake Forest, North Carolina, William and Mary, and VMI this month. Virginia Tech has been sending letters. The schools who have called have indicated they want to evaluate Casey’s first two games before deciding whether or not to offer.
Focusing on recruiting could be an easy thing to do, however Casey instead is intent on leading Salem to a state championship.
“I’m just trying to help my team win,” said Casey. “I want to win a state title. We have the talent to do a lot of good things. I’m not thinking about recruiting right now, just winning.”
Casey recorded the first interception of his career this year. He made the most of the play.
“I had an interception and returned it for a touchdown this year,” said Casey. “I didn’t have any interceptions before this year.”
