6-3, 235 pound linebacker prospect Devonta Brown of Charlottesville High School (VA) has received calls from five Division I schools in September – Virginia, Clemson, North Carolina, Maryland, and Duke.
Virginia has extended a written offer to Brown, who is playing the waiting game in hopes of receiving more.
“I don’t really have any favorites right now,” said Brown. “If I had to decide today, it would be Virginia. They have offered and have been with me the whole time. Other schools have thrown hints that they may offer but haven’t done anything yet. I’m going to play everything by ear, but if things aren’t going the way I want them to I’ll just make a decision. I probably won’t wait until February.”
Virginia and Clemson have discussed setting up an official visit. Brown says he may take his official to Virginia in January of 2004, while Clemson may be as early as December of 2003.
Brown attended UVA’s opening game victory over Duke, and came away impressed with the atmosphere.
“It was really good,” said Brown of the game. “They played good and I had a lot of fun. The place was packed.”
Brown, who is being recruited primarily as an inside or middle linebacker, has worked hard in the weight room over the summer and has put on about ten pounds of muscle.
He feels faster as well.
“I’m glad I got stronger over the summer,” said Brown. “I was about 225 at the end of last year and now I’m up to 235 or 240. I feel a little bit faster too.”
Charlottesville is off to an 0-2 start with a big game coming this week versus rival Albemarle High School. Brown believes he has played well but wants to see his team win.
“We are off to a bad start,” said Brown. “I’ve played pretty good, but we are 0-2 and need to start playing better for a run at Districts. I think we’ll turn it around.”
