Coming from two-time state champion Phoebus, 6-0, 185 pound cornerback DJ Parker is used to competition. He played both quarterback and cornerback for Phoebus, leading the Phantoms to glory in back-to-back seasons.

Parker is used to getting the opposing team’s best shot. So when he arrived at Hargrave this summer, he was not only used to the competition he would face within his own team, he welcomed it.

“It’s a lot of competition out here, getting some great practice and going against some of the best receivers,” said Parker, who will play cornerback at Virginia Tech. “It’s getting me ready for going to Virginia Tech. It’s been great.”

Parker’s hard-working style fits in exceptionally well with the Hargrave life-style. His work-ethic will undoubtedly make him a more effective player at Hargrave and for the Hokies.

“Hargrave’s a great school,” said Parker. “The coaching staff is great, they work hard and push us hard to get us ready for the next level. The teachers are great too, because they work with us a lot too.”

Hoping to enroll at Virginia Tech in January of 2004, Parker is working hard to improve his academics. Regardless of when he ends up at Virginia Tech, he is looking forward to being apart of the Hokies defense.

“Oh I’m excited about going to Virginia Tech,” said Parker. “I like the school, the education is really good. They have the best defense in the nation. I’m ready to get there.”

In the meantime, the talented corner is doing his part to ensure Virginia Tech gets top talent. Parker is actively recruiting two Hargrave prospects with Virginia Tech offers.

Both will make their decisions sometime this fall.

“I’m trying to recruit,” said Parker with a laugh. “[6-4, 200 pound WR] Justin Harper, I’m trying to get him. And [5-11, 190 pound DB] Meko Watson. I’m trying to get them join me and Cory Holt at Virginia Tech.”

Hokie fans have a chance to see Parker and Holt play today, when Hargrave takes on Virginia Tech’s JV squad at Lane Stadium. General admission seating.
