One of the better cornerback prospects plays for West Charlotte HS in Charlotte, NC. Rod Council , a 5-11, 175 pound cornerback/wide receiver, has earned recognition as one of the top cover guys in the Atlantic Region.
During Virginia’s summer camp earlier this year, Council says many prospects wanted to test his hyped cover ability.
“At the Virginia camp, guys were lining up to go against me,” said Council. “Even some of the defensive backs were switching to receiver. A lot of guys up there knew me. Not too many did well against me.”
It was at Virginia’s summer camp where Council earned his official offer from the Cavaliers, who are one of his favorite schools. Notre Dame and Michigan round out his top three.
Coach Groh’s personality during the camp is one of the reasons Council likes the Cavs so much.
“At the camp, Coach Groh was always getting on me, saying things like ‘who’s going to burn this guy next’,” said Council with a laugh. “He was getting me going. I like him because he’s so competitive. He’s the most competitive coach I’ve met.”
Notre Dame and Michigan round out Council’s top three schools. He is being recruited by many more, but hopes to make a decision during his season.
“I’ve kind of narrowed my choices to Notre Dame, Virginia, and Michigan,” said Council. “I like Notre Dame because I like talking to Coach Willingham a lot. I talk to him personally. I’ve never been there, so I’ll probably go there for an official visit. I like Virginia’s coaching staff a lot. I like the campus, and of course they have a great school. I want to major in Engineering, and they offer that.
“I plan to go ahead and decide with my family and my coach this season. I’m going to keep my decision within my family and announce it after the season. I want to take my official visits to get more information on each school. I want to visit all three of my favorites. Distance will not be a factor – I will go to the place that feels right all things included.”
Council has received offers from Notre Dame, Virginia, Michigan, UNC, Duke, Syracuse, Wake Forest, and Navy. He carries a 4.0 GPA and is the President of West Charlotte HS’s student council.
