Last season, Hargrave Military Academy boasted one of Virginia’s top recruits from the 2002 recruiting class in Ahmad Brooks. This season, Robert Prunty will coach one of the top players from the 2003 class in former Phoebus star Philip Brown .
Brown, who signed with the Cavaliers in February of 2003, has re-committed to Virginia and is excited about the opportunity Hargrave presents.
“I’m still 100% committed to Virginia,” said Brown. “I’m just so excited that Hargrave accepted me here. One year is not that long. I’ll take care of things this year and go to Virginia next fall.”
Brown’s path to Hargrave has not been a smooth one. Before he graduated from Phoebus, he withdrew and enrolled at Fork Union Military Academy. He withdrew from Fork Union after only a short time in the institute.
This summer, Brown took classes at Heritage high school (Newport News, VA) before recently enrolling at Hargrave. He did very well in those courses and expects to keep his momentum going.
“I went to summer school and got A’s in both classes,” said Brown. “I’m focused on taking care of business this year. Everything’s just going great. I wish I could have gotten here sooner.”
Coach Prunty noted Brown as one of those players who have done well to this point in practice. Assuming Brown continues on the track to qualifying academically, he could see early playing time in Charlottesville as a true freshman.
“Like Coach Prunty says, this is like my red-shirt season,” said Brown. “By the time I get to Virginia, I think I’ll be able to contribute early.”
