A new name emerging recently for Virginia Tech fans has been Carl Grimes, a 5-9, 185 pound running back/wide receiver prospect from St. Martin Deporres in Detroit, Michigan. He is one of the most exciting players in the state of Michigan. As a junior, he wracked-up just under 1,800 yards combined rushing and receiving and scored 15 touchdowns

Moreover, Grimes is as well-mannered a student athlete off the field as he electric on it. He has become a favorite of St. Martin Deporres head coach Gregory Carter over the past few years.

“Carl has been a starter for us since the latter part of his freshman year, and he hasn’t missed a game since,” said Carter. “He plays running back for us but flanks out occasionally. He plays cornerback on third down situations. Off the field, he is an outstanding kid and a great student. I can’t say enough good things about Carl – he’s one of my favorites.”

Grimes is one of the fastest players in the state, as he has been timed at 10.7 in the 100 meters. His skills have earned him scholarship offers from Virginia Tech and Florida State, two teams who are high on his list of schools. Most of the Big Ten along with a few ACC programs (GT and UNC) are heavily involved as well.

The Hokies currently have the edge would be in great position if Grimes had to make a decision today.

“Virginia Tech is very very high on his list,” said Carter. “In fact, if he had to choose today, he would choose Virginia Tech. He just really likes everything about them. My kids aren’t afraid to go out of state either. I’ve had players recently go to Duke and other programs that are far away.”

With his size and speed, it would appear Grimes would be an obvious wide receiver or cornerback target. That may not be the case, however, as his skills at the running back position are becoming well noticed.

“Actually, after schools see film on Carl, they are coming back saying they like him at running back,” said Carter. “I believe Virginia Tech likes him at running back as well. He’s got all of the tools. Some schools may be looking for bigger type running backs, but none of the bigger guys can do what Carl can do.”

In addition to football, Grimes stars in track and basketball. He plans on attending camps this summer, however does not know which ones he will visit. It looks like the Hokies are in pretty good shape at this point for one of the Midwest’s most explosive players
