The recruitment of Kecoughtan (Hampton, VA) Jerod Mayo has picked up over the past month. Following official scholarship offers from Virginia and Virginia Tech, the athletic linebacker has noticed an increase in the amount of information schools are sending.

Recently, he picked up a verbal offer and believes more could be on the way.

“Purdue just verbally offered me a scholarship,” said Mayo. “I think NC State will more than likely offer me as well.

“Ever since UVA and Virginia Tech offered, a lot of schools have sent me things. East Carolina and Tennessee have sent me a lot of stuff about their school. North Carolina has too. Carolina has just started coming into the picture a lot more. I like what they are writing about their program.”

At this point in the process, Mayo is taking everything in stride. He hopes to narrow his list by the fall and plans on making a decision sometime in early February.

“I’m open to everything right now” said Mayo. “I want to narrow things down before my official visits. After I take my official visits, I will narrow things even more – get the list down before signing day. I know I’m going to decide around signing day.”

While the Cavaliers and the Hokies have been after him hard, Mayo is not necessarily looking to stay in-state. He wants to take a look at other schools to find the situation that suits him the best. Location will not be too big of a factor in his decision.

“It doesn’t matter to me,” said Mayo when asked if he would like to stay in-state. “I’m looking for football as well as academics. I want the total package in a program.”

With the exception of Virginia Tech, schools recruiting Mayo would like for him to stop by their summer camps for an up-close look. He is not sure which camps he will visit, but may go to Virginia for one-day.

Mayo would like to take some unofficial visits this summer, and he already has planned one unofficial trip this fall.

“Virginia Tech said I didn’t have to go to their camp,” said Mayo. “I may stop by UVA for one day. A lot of teams just want me to go for one day. I don’t know though. Our team is going to have our own camp at a small college during the summer. That’s what I’m looking forward to, because I want our team to get some chemistry going into the season.

“I may take unofficial visits to Maryland and NC State this summer. During the season, I will probably visit Purdue for the game against Penn State. That would be an unofficial visit.”
