Dudley (Greensboro, NC) high school running back Jamaal Edwards has received around 15 official scholarship offers this spring.
Out of the 15 who have offered, four currently stand out above the rest.
“My top four right now are [North] Carolina, Florida State, Miami (FL), and Virginia,” said Edwards. “I have offers from all four. I’m also thinking about [NC] State and Clemson.”
In a year where the state of North Carolina boasts several good running back prospects, Edwards is one of the best.
“Jamaal is a combination of a quick, powerful, and slashing runner,” said Dudley head coach Victor Floyd. “He has great hands, can block, and can really do it all. We will use him more in the passing game this year to demonstrate his receiving skills. He is a great receiver.”
One thing separating Edwards from the rest of North Carolina’s best is his speed. Edwards was clocked at 4.3 in the 40 during a combine this past Saturday. He won a national sprint championship at the age of 13.
A phenomenal athlete, Edwards also recorded a vertical leap of 38 inches and benched 205 pounds 14 times during the recent combine.
Sure to be one of the highest recruited players in North Carolina, Edwards will take his time in making a decision.
“I want to take my official visits,” said Edwards. “I will make my decision after football season. I want to focus on football and then focus on recruiting.”
As a junior, Edwards rushed for 2,378 yards and scored 31 touchdowns. He helped lead Dudley to a state title, although he did not do it alone. Helping him were two of the state of North Carolina’s other top prospects, safety Martel Thatch and defensive tackle DeMario Pressley.
The trio is close on and off the field, however do not plan on following each other to the same college.
“Everybody has to do what’s best for everybody,” said Edwards. “What’s best for me may not be best for the other two.”
