One of the top athletes in the state of Pennsylvania is attracting a whole lot of attention this spring. Tyrell Sales , the 6-5, 230 pound linebacker prospect from Butler High School in Butler, Pennsylvania, has received early offers from Florida State, Michigan, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Maryland, West Virginia, and Stanford.

According to Butler head coach Garry Cathell, Sales is the most sought after prospect he has ever coached.

“Tyrell is probably the heaviest recruited player I’ve ever had,” said Cathell. “He’s a great linebacker. He could also play as a down end. Florida State wants him as a rush defensive end. Coach Paterno even told us that he could play on offense, at tight end…that’s how athletically gifted he is.”

If Sales is anything, he is an outstanding athlete. He runs around a 4.5/4.6 in the 40, which is remarkable for someone his size. Even gaining 15 pounds of muscle since the end of his junior season has not slowed him down, as he has kept his speed in tact.

“Coaches have video of him flying all around the football field,” said Cathell. “But the video was of him 15 pounds lighter, around 215. He is up to 230 now and his speed is still there.”

In addition to football, Sales has made a name for himself in basketball and track. He throws the discuss and javelin, and is ranked in the top four in his class in each event. Sales has a good reputation in basketball as well, taking his game on the road in several AAU tournaments.

Recently, Sales played in the Southern Invitational in Charlottesville.

“He said he had a very good time in Charlottesville,” said Cathell. “The main reason he went down there was to get a look at the campus. That’s why he is going to the Nike Camp this weekend, to look at Virginia Tech’s campus. He wants to check out many Universities this spring, and hopes to narrow his list to five schools by the end of May or June.

“Tyrell is a very meticulous young man. He is a quality kid. He wants to check out everything before narrowing his list.”

According to Cathell, both Virginia and Virginia Tech have said that they will offer Sales very soon. Bud Foster and Bryan Stinespring are recruiting him for Virginia Tech while Danny Rocco is Virginia’s primary recruiter.

In the classroom, Sales has earned a 3.7 grade point average and will easily qualify for freshman eligibility. We hope to catch up with Tyrell
