Long perceived as a Virginia Tech lean, maybe even a Virginia Tech lock, Vince Hall’s recruitment got interesting at the end, as he was torn between UNC and Virginia Tech.
Today, Hall made his decision — to attend VT — but it wasn’t easy.
“Yeah, it was pretty tough. It really came down to where I was most comfortable. I’m very familiar with Tech, and felt comfortable with the people and the campus and the program.”
Hall verified that at the beginning of the week, he was ready to commit to the Tarheels.
“They [UNC] told me that they hadn’t had a good season this year, but they felt I could be part of building a good foundation. But later on in that process, I decided I’m not the kind of person to start that. I like to go somewhere where the foundation is already laid, and I can continue the legacy of it.”
How did the Tech coaches turn the tide?
“When the Tech coaches came in, I talked to them, and it came down to specific facts, and the fact is that Tech was the better team.”
On opportunities for playing time, Hall said, “I feel like I can play fairly early. Of course you have to compete for a starting position, but I feel like I can do that.”
Hall called both Virginia Tech and UNC to tell them of his decision, and at this point, he will no longer entertain recruiting-related discussions with the Tarheels. “[UNC Head] Coach Bunting, throughout the process we became friends, and he told me, if I have any questions about college in general, to call him. We’re not going to talk anymore about the recruiting process, though.”
It got tricky at the end, but a last-minute rush by the VT coaches pulled it off, and Vince Hall is VT-bound.
