Philip Brown , the Phoebus defensive back who is rated as one of the top players in the state of Virginia, made a verbal commitment today to the University of Virginia.
Brown chose the Cavaliers earlier today over Virginia Tech, Clemson, and Maryland.
“This is something I’ve felt in my heart for a long time,” said Brown about his commitment. “Coach [Mike] London and Coach [Al] Groh did a great job. They believed in me when everyone was talking about me and when there was talk about my grades. They stuck with me. Coach Groh called me all the time and never backed off.”
Originally planning to visit both state schools before making his decision, Brown felt now was the right time to make things official.
“It did feel like the right time,” said Brown. “I was interested in Virginia Tech as well, but I was more interested in Virginia, so I made the choice.
“It’s a big relief. Now I can take a breather and focus on other things.”
Early in the recruiting race, Virginia Tech was the team Brown was favoring. Over time, however, Virginia kept becoming more and more of a factor and eventually earned a commitment.
“Virginia just kept in touch with me every week,” said Brown. “Plus, Coach London is a hometown guy. I felt really comfortable talking to him from day one. We are the same type of person, and I like his energy. I think Virginia will be able to push me to my max.”
Following his senior year, Brown may have to attend prep school. His decision, however, will remain the same no matter what happens.
“My decision is final,” said Brown.
As a senior, Brown finished with seven interceptions from his cornerback position. He returned two of those for touchdowns. An excellent special teams player as well, Brown returned four punts and two kickoffs for touchdowns. His performance helped Phoebus capture a second consecutive state title.
