Dunbar TE Vernon Davis took his first official visit last weekend when he tripped to West Lafayette, Indiana, to check out the Purdue Boilermakers.
His first official visit was a successfull one.
“It went pretty good,” said Davis. “I like the coaching staff. The players are real, real good people. I liked it.”
Despite a good time, the visit wasn’t enough to pull Purdue even with Davis’ two favorites, Virginia and Maryland.
“No,” said Davis. “They aren’t up there with those two. They [Virginia and Maryland] are still my favorites.”
Davis will make a visit to Maryland on December 20 and has a scheduled trip to Virginia for the weekend of January 17. He recently scheduled one more visit, which will be his last.
“I will visit Florida on January 24,” said Davis. “I’m not going to visit anywhere else after that.
“I will decide by signing day.”
Although Florida will get the last shot at persuading Davis, Virginia and Maryland have been the top two in this race for quite some time. The Cavalier coaches were in-home earlier today, as coaches Prince and Groh paid a visit to the outstanding tight end prospect.
Coach Groh’s visits are making a positive mark on Davis’ thinking.
“I love the coaching staff,” said Davis. “[Coach Groh]is the only head coach that makes that many trips to see me, either to my home or my school.”
Davis concluded his stellar high school career by catching 25 receptions for 600 yards and seven touchdowns. He accomplished all of that while being sidelined three games with a bone bruise, an injury that is completely healed.
Look for this decision to come down to the Terrapins and the Cavaliers. Virginia has a great shot because of the relationship between Davis and the coaching staff, in-particular Al Groh, but the decision will be very close in the end. At this point, it’s anyone’s guess which school Davis will end up choosing.
