Reggie Smith , the talented 6-2, 230 pound outside linebacker prospect from Shaw High School in Cleveland, OH, has kept his top five list pretty much the same from day one. At this point, however, one of those five schools really stands out in the recruiting race.
“Virginia’s my leader,” said Smith, who also lists Maryland, Boston College, Missouri, and Iowa in his top five. “Their academics are good. They are recruiting me the hardest out of everyone. They have been there from day one. They always keep in touch with me and communicate. I feel the love you know.
“And my uncle lives in Virginia, so I have family there as well.”
Smith had an impressive final year for Shaw, breaking the school record for sacks in a single season with 18 and making 120 tackles. He also broke the Shaw career sack record, surpassing the initial mark of 50 sacks.
The outstanding prospect has set up official visits to Boston College on November 16 and Virginia on December 6, which happens to be the same day as his birthday. Despite Virginia having a clear edge, Smith wants to make all five of his official visits.
“I’m going to take all five visits,” said Smith. “I’m looking forward to the Boston College visit, but Virginia is number one. I am going to let all of the schools know that Virginia is my leader.”
To get himself ready for college, Smith plans to forego playing varsity basketball and concentrate on academics. Despite his love for the sport, he knows preparing for the next level is the top priority.
“I cried today,” joked Smith of not playing basketball this year. “I’m a good basketball player to, and this year would have been my second year as a varsity starter at power forward. I know this has to be done though…there’s a lot riding on it [for me].”
Smith wants to schedule his remaining visits pretty soon, so stay tuned to the Sabre Edge for further recruiting updates.
