Maurice DeShazo helped take Virginia Tech to near the top of the Big East during his career in Blacksburg. He led the Hokies to a win in the Independence Bowl and an appearance in the Gator Bowl. He was a 3-year starter at quarterback. He led the Big East in passing efficiency in 1993.
DeShazo was the #3 recruit in the state according to The Roanoke Times. He chose the Hokies over UVA and UNC. He was a member of Tom Lemming's 1990 All-American team. Super Prep rated him the #19 prospect in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
