You guys sound like a bunch of old fuddy duddys. Sports programs add to
The overall attractiveness of going to a college. Some kids would never have the opportunity to go if not for a scholarship or the motivation to apply themselves growing up. This motivation applies to more then just the students who actually get scholarships. There are plenty of kids who wouldn’t apply themselves if they didn’t see that kids in college were enjoying life.
The whole pay players what they’re worth topic doesn’t consider the ramifications it would have on non revenue sports programs the school offers. Universities as a whole wouldn’t be as attractive, if all they had was a football/ basketball team. While many students don’t appreciate the non revenue sports while on campus plenty of us enjoy those programs & the opportunity to stay connected to your school after you graduate. The USA Olympic teams would certainly take a hit if it wasn’t for our universities fielding these programs. I have no problem with the status quo. Nobody is forcing anyone to play. Imho
My only question would be is it really worth the money spent giving scholarships to foreign athletes. I mean no disrespect to our foreign athletes but maybe if all of these scholarships were reserved for american students more high school kids would apply themselves to earn one of those scholarships. Especially, in a sport like tennis where the USA doesn’t seem to be as dominate as it used to be on the world level.
