Great suggestions!

As you get away from carb rich foods, you often find yourself looking for more flavor. I became a huge fan of hot sauces and hot peppers. (Although habaneros are really hot, they also have the best flavor IMHO). Also love the taste of Serranos).

In addition to McCormick seasonings, Weber (the grill manufacturer) also sells some pretty good seasonings, especially for chicken. If you grill boneless skinless chicken breasts, you really need something for flavor...lol

As for cooking, I bought one of those NuWave counter top grills, and have been using it for years (actually on my second one...wore the first one out). The grease drips down into the pan, so you're getting it out of your food, and it cooks relatively quickly.

In order to reduce calories, I started drinking my coffee black. You will either develop a taste for good coffee, or you'll stop drinking it. My coffee journey has been a fun one, and it's not over yet. MEHokie is a great coffee mentor. Speaking of beverages, stop drinking sodas, or at least severely cut back on them. Switch to water (and black coffee). If you need something to help you transition away from sodas, try adding a squirt of Real Lemon into your water. Eventually you'll get to the point where you just drink your water straight.

As a general point, don't worry about dietary fat in your food...concentrate on reducing carbs. Fat will keep you satiated, so you won't feel hungry as quickly as if you eat a high carb diet. As for carbs, I like to say if you're going to eat carbs, make them count. (i.e. get them from veggies, nuts and some fruits.) A lot of fruit is loaded with sugar, so beware. When it comes to veggies, dark greens are you best friend.

As for supplements, I have a host of different items, but I've slacked off from taking most of them daily (guess I should add them back).
Specifically I take: Vitamin C, D3, E, B12, Magnesium, Zinc, CoQ10 and fish oil.
Frankly I can't tell any difference in my energy level if I take them or not.

When I decided to get strict with my diet, I created an Excel chart that listed each food, and their calories, carbs, fat & protein. It would sum the totals at the bottom of the page. The tough part was building it. Maintenance was easy, I just added a line if I found something new for my diet. Where this really came in handy was if I wanted a snack. I would look at my carb intake for the day to decide if I would have an apple or a protein shake. It also helped me to take a serious look at my individual food choices. For example, I found the difference in fat and calories between bacon and sausage was astounding. I eventually settled into a diet that was 1/3 fat, 1/3 protein, and 1/3 carb, and I could sustain that indefinitely. I also lost about 1.5 lbs/week on it.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure you can sustain that in the long run. Going on a Ketogenic diet may help you drop weight fast, but you may not want to stay on that indefinitely.

Let me know if you want a copy of my Excel chart. You'll need to type over the food I have in there to add your own. I think I created it using Excel 2007, so any newer versions should be able to read it. It's not "slick," but it is functional for daily tracking.

Good luck!
