One has to wonder...
...how a global company, sourcing parts from the same suppliers to almost every other major manufacturer, continues to supply sub-standard automobiles. I had high hopes when Mercedes bought them, but instead of Mercedes bring up Chrysler's quality, it looked like Chrysler drug Mercedes' quality down. They sold it to Fiat (Fix it again Tony), and regained their quality craftsmanship.
My first "new" car was a 1986 Dodge D-100 pickup. By far, that was the worst steaming pile of crap I've ever owned, far surpassing my Olds Cutlass with the crappy carburetor. My next vehicle was a 914, followed by a 325ES, followed by a Toyota Truck (and more BMWs, another Toyota truck and finally my first FWD automobile - a Honda). I haven't purchased an American automobile since, so I guess you can say Chrysler ruined it for me. Although I love the look and capabilities of a Jeep, I hesitate to buy another Chrysler. Now if they would offer a Cummings diesel in a 2-door Wrangler...
But I've heard Toyota is seriously thinking about bringing another "body on frame" 4X4 to the market to challenge the Wrangler. Rumor has it that it will be a little smaller than the FJ Cruiser so it's more "nimble" on trails. Fingers crossed they'll put a 4-link on a solid axle in the rear. Knowing Toyota, they'll probably have an IFS to give it better road manners. That might become my first 4x4 automobile...
