FWIW the VHSL reorganized its levels

from AAA, AA, and A to A, AA, AAA, 4A, 5A, and 6. Below is a comparison between the 2 classifications:

Old/New
Large AAA = 6A
Small AAA = 5A
Large AA = 4A
Small AA = AAA
Large A = AA
Small A = A

Football was the only sport that subdivided A, AA, and AAA into 2 subdivisions. The boundary lines between for the subdivisions were redone every 2 years and it was based solely on a school's total population. Keep in mind that just about every district had both large and small schools, so relying on classification to determine competition level may not always be a good indicator unless you factor in the region of VA.

I played HS football in the early 90s in VA for a AA school in the Valley District. It wasn't that uncommon to see a Valley District team to beat some AAA teams (i.e. Albemarle, Culpepper, etc.) in the area during the regular season. However, I doubt the best AA team would come close to beating a AAA from the 757. It is a toss up about the AAA teams around Roanoke and Lynchburg.
