love the proactive notification...

Parents:

I am sure you know about the tragic events in Florida yesterday. I know that each of you feel for the community in Florida and I hope that you join me in sending them our thoughts and prayers as they deal with this tragedy. As events occur, it brings many questions and concerns about our own community. I am in hopes to pass on information to put you at ease.

First of all, please know that we take any and all threats seriously. We investigate each one and with our wonderful police department we work to make our school and district as safe as possible. The following are some things we do to assure that our school and community are safe:

1. Security doors. During the school day, visitors are only able to enter the main entrance. They have to check in at the front and are asked about their business on campus that day. Most of the time, visitors stay in the front office area and do not progress beyond our secure doors. If they do, they are usually escorted in the building. We also check our exterior doors multiple times each day to make sure they are secure.

2. Police officer - We have a full time officer on campus everyday and another officer is on duty from mid morning through our night activities. This gives us coverage of at least 1 officer from about 6:30 a.m. until all activities end. We also have 2 prevention control officers that patrol outside of the building each day to try to detect any possible issues.

3. 1-888-KID-CHAT is a reporting system to allow for students and/or parents to report possible issues anonymously. We investigate each issue reported to assure there is not a problem or handle the incident.

4. Student reporting - We have a great student body and they will report issues that do not seem correct or maybe dangerous. I encourage you to talk with your student to encourage them to report any activity that could be a safety issue on campus. They are the ones that are most connected and will pick up on issues faster than anyone else. The quicker they report something, the better chance we have in resolving the issue.

5. Emergency Procedures: We cover our emergency procedures with our staff and students. We discuss evacuations and lock downs. I have sent our a reminder to our staff, again, to cover the material and make sure they know what to do in the event an issue occurs on campus. We schedule drills of each kind to assure we practice. Sometimes the drills have to be adjusted when events like Wednesday occur so we do not create more panic. We had a fire drill yesterday and have a lock down drill scheduled.

6. Social Media: Please report an issue seen on social media. This is currently a popular method for communicating potential issues. Social media creates a lot of issues in high schools and we encourage you to have conversations with your child about the dangers of social media and encourage them to limit the use of the system.

I hope that the above alleviate any concerns that you may have. It is a team effort to keep everyone in our community safe and being productive. I know that you are willing to help.

You can also help by reiterating what a person can do if someone is anywhere trying to harm others.

1. Stay calm, identify the issue and where it is and move quickly away from the situation.

2. Find a safe location to hide. (classroom, closet, etc.).

3. Secure the location as best as possible. (Furniture against the door, etc)

4. Prepare in case the aggressor is in your area (have staplers, textbooks, other objects, etc.)

5. Defend yourself if necessary. Through items at the individual, attack them if you can not get away. Work to alleviate the threat.

6. Wait for police to enter and clear your safe location. They will identify themselves and will be able to access a room.

Please know that we always review our plans to do the best job we can to assure the safety of our students and staff. I know that together we can keep our community safe and help those that are faced with struggling times.

I appreciate your support and concern for our school and community.
