I think we saw a failure to adjust
to a very different style of game. Duke played a very passive zone, guarding the three point line and the rim, correctly noting that we never shoot mid-range shots (except Bibbs). The foul line jumper was open all night, and we were hesitant to shoot it - the mid-range game is becoming extinct in basketball. Clarke and Blackshear kept taking it to the rim against their bigs, and losing that battle. And when we got several open lay-ups, we were so surprised that we blew them. Not sure why we didn't keep Bibbs at the high post and feed him consistently, though it would have taken away his three-point threat.
On the defensive end, Allen and Trent were hitting NBA threes like they were lay-ups; that's why they are NBA players. We failed to adjust to staying home on them. But they are a top-notch offensive team, it's hard not to give up something.
Seems our fans want to blame all the losses on lack of effort (or the refs). I think it's often the challenge of playing different styles in different venues. I expect we will be much better prepared to play them at Cassell, and play much better. Though if they get Bagley back, he will present major problems.
