Two points: (1) the home/road adjustments make it more complicated that
just the wins and losses: where the games take place also matters (in an arbitrary fashion, just as all of the RPI elements are arbitrary), and (2) the manner in which the selection committee uses RPI implicitly implies that it is a measure of the relative strengths of the teams. The team sheets are ordered by RPI; the wins are grouped by RPI. If you weren't using RPI as a measure of relative strength, why would you do that?
