FWIW VT has lost the following games to GT with Bud as DC
1990: 6-3
2006: 27-38
2009: 23-28
2014: 24-27
2016: 20-30
2017: 22-28
Besides last season, you might be able to say the defense was at least partially to blame for the 1990, maybe 2006, 2009, 2014, and maybe 2016.
1990: All 3 FGs were scored in the 4th Q. VT had an early 3-0 lead and GT kicked the GW FG with 0:08 to go in the game. GT outgained VT in total yards 360 vs. 340.
2006: GT jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the 1st Q and then went on a 17 point run at the end of the first half/3rd Q. Calvin Johnson had a big game 6 rec 115 yds and 2 TDs
2009: GT ended up with 309 yds rushing, winning the TOP (38:22 vs. 21:38), and outgained VT (360 vs. 334). Tough for the offense to win the game when VT only ran 45 plays and GT ran 70 plays.
2014: Defense gave up 10 points in a little over 2 mins late in the 4th Q; scored TD with 2:03 and kicked GW FG with 0:00. Like the BC game on Thur night (Matty Ice's comeback game), the defense was on the field at the end and it is ultimately their responsibility to keep the offense from driving 33 yds down the field to kick a GW FG.
2016: Even though the offense started out slow which allowed GT to jump out to a 20-0 lead. The defense did give up 2 big rushing TDs in the game which had an impact on the game; 53 yd run by Matthew Jordan in the 1st Q and 56 yd run by Marcus Marshall in the 4th Q.
