What about the 2002 Gator Bowl?


I would say that started to turn off a lot of people seeing VT give up 17 points in the 4th Quarter to an "inferior" (ranking wise) FSU team. Then there was the shootout in the desert (loss to Cal in the 2003 Insight Bowl) and the loss to Auburn in the 2005 Sugar Bowl. Both game were winnable games for VT (if the team had done a few things differently). Sandwiched in between those losses was a close win against Air Force in the 2002 San Fran Bowl. Even though Air Force runs the triple option and Fisher DeBerry was a good HC, VT probably should have won that game by 10+ points if the team had been better prepared/focused (not sure the right word here).

That stretch of 4 years probably set the team's postseason image back or undid the 1 year of magic captured by the magic of MV and maybe even laid the foundation for the future losses against Georgia, Kansas, Stanford, and Michigan. I included the Stanford loss because the team looked completely lost and outclassed in the second half. Hard to believe that Stanford only had a 1 point lead at halftime.
