I think it has to do with the idea that a teacher could wield...


..."power" over a student in order to coerce them into partaking in a sexual relationship that they might not otherwise desire. Unlike a folks in other professions, teachers have a unique influence on those under their professional "care", as the they determine grades, which can have an impact on students' self esteem, as well as the students' futures (college choices, career choices, etc.).

I understand the point you are making, and I agree that this is definitely not a clear cut issue. But to me, the law makes sense. Whether or not it will hold up constitutionally remains to be seen.
