VT - UNC Dual Predictions ......

Don't have a good feeling about this dual with the injuries and the specific matchups as VT is only favored at five weights (133, 165, 186, 197, and 285) and I don't have a good sense that we should actually be favored at 285 due to the most recent results. UNC is only 8-8 in dual matches this year but they have 8 ranked wrestlers (Coaches Panel Rankings), same as VT, and they appear to match up well with VT. VT might need that 3 point home crowd favorite to come into play tomorrow for a lower ranked wrestler to step up and beat one of the higher ranked UNC guys.

125: Kyle Norstrem would be a solid favorite over an unranked James Szymanski but this is looking like bonus points for UNC against VT's backup Ryan More. More got pinned last week by Duke's Thayer Atkins. I am going to say he is a little better this week and only gives up the major decision. UNC 4-0

133: #13 Dennis Gustafson will have his hands full with #20 UNC true freshman Zach Sherman, although he is only 13-13 this season. His results lately have been poor as he has lost 6 of 7 matches but they have been all good guys (Forys, Mueller, DelVecchio, Naser, Terao, and Bridges). Gus beat Sherman 6-4 back in November. Gus, although he has leveled out somewhat in the last month, will gut this one out for a decision. UNC up 4-3.

141: #32 Brent Moore vs #18 AC Headlee. Moore is going to have to step up his offensive game to get this win. Both wrestlers beat Pitt's Zanetta recently by 2 points. This is a close match to call but I am going with Headlee by decision. UNC 7-3.

149: #26 Ryan Blees vs #4 Troy Heilmann. Blees has been great lately winning 13 of 14 matches I believe. Heilmann's #4 ranking is too high I believe but he is 24-3 this year but Blees is 18-5 and great at 149 for VT. I will go with Heilmann by decision but this is 2 matches in a row where a steal is possible. UNC 10-3.

157: unranked Solomon Chishko vs #17 Kenny Monday. Sully will be stepping in for BC at this weight this week but I actually think it is a step down based on his recent matches. He just is not on his game. I think BC could beat Monday but don't think Sully will pull it off. UNC 13-3.

165: #3 David McFadden vs. unranked William MacDonald or Clay Lautt. Bonus points must happen here and they will in some form. I will go with a MD here because it looks like McFadden has been running out of gas recently in the 3rd but they've had a week off so maybe his tank is full again. UNC 13-7.

174: #31 Hunter Bolen vs unranked (would be ranked 7 to 10 but he was off awhile) Ethan Ramos. Ramos defaulted against Hunter in the Appalachian Open due to injury but I will assume he goes here. Ramos will control this match and I will go with a decision for him. UNC 16-7.

184: #7 Zack Zavatsky vs. #17 Chip Ness. Based on recent results, ZZ is 5 or 6 points better than Ness and will win. Could get a MD but I will go with regular decision. UNC 16-10.

197: #2 Jared Haught vs #15 Danny Chaid. Chaid has lost to Haught be decision their two previous matches and that's the way this one probably goes. UNC 16-13.

285: #17 Andrew Dunn vs #24 Cory Daniel. Dunn beat Daniel 3-1 in November but Dunn has been unable to score lately going scoreless in last 3 matches I believe. Daniel is 21-6 this year and just beat Pitt's Ryan Solomon. I just can't pick Dunn right now.

UNC wins 19-13 in my weight-by-weight analysis. But you have to think that VT at home will steal at least one of 141, 149, 157, or 285 which would even the dual up. Bonus points may decide this. My analysis which is probably too analytical suggest a UNC win but on "Senior Night" and at home pushes me towards a VT narrow win.

I guess we will see on Saturday night.
