If you are going to do something competitive, try to win

far worse for someone to find out you let them win.

Heck, I don't recall ever "letting" one of my kids win when we played a board or card game. Granted, when they were younger, we played games where winning and losing was pure chance (and not strategy). But the moment they started showing interest in games like rummy, Monopoly, Uno, or Cataan, it's on like Donkey Kong.

If you are going to beat me, you are going to earn it.

Only exception I can think of that I make is when I'm sparring in karate. I will turn things down a notch if someone is a much lower rank. But in that case, we are training, not competing. My job is to help them get better, not kick the carp out of them.
