I think it comes down to this....
a coach needs to be willing to sell his soul to the devil and be ready to jump ship or bolt to the next program when the $h!# hits the fan (ala Pete Carroll, Butch Davis or half the SEC coaches).
I think most elite programs bend the rules to the point of almost cheating (if not cheating). Everyone thinks Saban is the greatest ever. The fix is in on that dude IMO, but college football turns a blind eye to CFB royalty like Bama, ND, USC (most times), OU, OSU, etc.
