You are correct. Honestly I could see Notre Dame going either way.

The football fan in my would like to see Notre Dame continue playing with the "big boys." However, if it means "big time college football" becomes even more semi-pro, then I would like to see 1 big name program (doesn't have to be a blue blood) take a stand and indirectly say 'We were wrong getting into bed with the Devil (aka large revenue streams) and we are not going to continue making that same mistake.'
