Honestly, I could see the power conferences do that

or even form a new division level under the NCAA umbrella. I don't believe the top 16-20 programs could break away and remain in the NCAA without being subject to the various GoRs. At least I thought forming a new association and/or going even more "semi-pro" could be loopholes to void the ones they have already signed.

The down side to the power conferences breaking away is each sport has its fair share of "dead weight." Are the top programs tired of supporting the "dead weight" in their respective sport? The answer to that question may determine which path the schools decide to go down.
