They didn't know when, but the environment was so corrosive, they knew it

was a matter of time.

Yes, no coach can control when an assistant leaves, but how many programs lose ALL assistant coaches at once?

SG knew the end was near...he interviewed for a job at SMU and was auditioning for the one he has now for 2 years.

He was careful not to violate the terms of his contract so he could get paid, but made it impossible for JW to keep him on.

SG was the architect of his firing and the program was in a death spiral when JW pulled the plug.

When JJ took over, the hole was so deep, it is doubtful that anyone one could have done any better in 2 years.

Finally, contrast the way the program is perceived now vs. when SG was in charge. No constant bickering and whining about refs, the selection committee and the rest of the AD.

And this is reflected in the way the players act on the court.

Bottom line, SG had the potential to be a great coach, but he couldn't get out of his own way. Like all of us with intrinsic flaws, he always blamed someone else and was limited in his ability for self assessment.

I believe as the dreams of the man did not match his ambitions, he was on the verge of self imploding.

He is in the right job....finally.

As for his legacy at VT, Ricky Stokes made him look like a genius. Hell, Ricky Stokes would make me look like a genius... and SG got VT competitive in BB again, however erratic and rocky that road was, it came as such a relief that most could not see the coming train wreck and were shocked when it happened. Even today, the fan base is split about their feelings about SG.

It is understandable, for SG was a very divisive personality.
