I don't disagree with you at all.
It is a down side to scheduling future OOC games 10+ years in advance. Even 1-2 years in advance doesn't help predict the future. However, ADs and/or HCs may see this season as a reason it doesn't "pay" to schedule OOC games against a P5 marquee opponent. Instead, they may decide to take a page out of what USC-w did 10 years ago with they played 12 games against P5 schools. That season (forget the year) USC's OOC games was against Notre Dame (average I think), Minnesota (bad), and Syracuse (bad) when the Orange was in the Big East and the Big East was still a BCS conference. It may have been after BC, Miami, and VT joined the ACC.
I agree with you that most fans want to see their teams play marquee opponents. However, ADs at some schools know their stadium will sellout no matter the opponent. For those schools there is no risk of losing revenue for scheduling OOC games against inferior opponents.
