In 2009, the Colts were 14-0 and on the verge of a perfect season
they sat starters in the final two games and finished 14-2. That means a smart coach understood that the championship was more important than anything. One of the rarest goals in the NFL was in reach and the Colts took a pass. How does the UGa-GT rivalry compare to that?
And it not realistic in my opinion to expect that fan passion for GT/UGa, or any big time rivalry for that matter, would stay level if the games were not relevant to playoff berths.
When OSU lost to Oklahoma, they knew they had to play a perfect season from then on the ensure themselves a playoff slot. That made every game critical and the Iowa loss was more dramatic for that reason. In an auto-bid world, the OU and Iowa losses mean nothing. No drama, no repercussions.
It seems many want to risk losing what makes college football the best sport in the US, in order to get, I dunno, what? Order, certainty, uniformity? If that is what you want, don't be surprised when you get it and Notre Dame/USC has all the drama of an NBA regular season game. [Post edited by lawhokie at 12/15/2017 09:08AM]
