The obvious is the hiring of much better coaches into the ACC.
The not so obvious is that when the Athletic Directors of the ACC saw the Big XII picked apart by the B1G, PAC 12, and SEC, it put the fear of god into them that it was time to make the ACC a better football conference if it wanted to survive.
All of a sudden, everyone built a new Indoor Practice Facility. Duke upgraded their stadium and started taking football seriously. We brought in Pitt, Syracuse, and Notre Dame to help with television. Then the efforts of Florida State and Clemson started paying off. The ACC started out recruiting the SEC East schools for football talent. The ACC reached par with the SEC West.
