I am most interested in the donors who donate a large amount

I interpreted the doom-and-gloom in the article to be referring to the notion that schools (particularly private schools) have become more dependent in recent years on these "large donations" to survive than they are willing to admit publicly. If that well starts to go dry, then schools could be forced to reduce the number of sports that are sponsored. In some cases maybe even down to the bare minimum in order to maintain a DI status.

I guess there is a belief out there that if a school reduces the number of sports it sponsors, then it will also see a reduction in the amount of donations it receives from its fan base. Once that cycle starts, then it may become more difficult for the school to recover. I am not sure I completely subscribe to that position, but I don't think private schools will have a tougher time to recover than public schools.
