Eat the mistake and move on or come up with an excuse and keep hearing about it. That's the two choices here.

It reminds me of a golfer who has an open fairway on the tee box and hits it in the woods. Then decides instead of chipping it out through the opening in the woods tries to hit low percentage shot through a narrow opening at the green. Instead of getting a bogey they get a triple bogey and lose. They can use all the bravado they want, but a low percentage shot is not the smartest shot. Again admit your mistake, learn from it and move on.
