I think as a fan sport, soccer has two issues with winning over US fans

One, it is an endurance sport and not a sport of explosive athleticism. Every other wildly popular sport in the US, quite frankly, has a lot of standing around in it followed by brief flashes of jaw-dropping action. But to even begin to play soccer at a world-level, it almost starts with the ability to run a half-marathon.

Two, American sports fans value toughness over every other trait in our sports heroes. You want our respect, play in a Super Bowl with a separated shoulder. Lose the tip of your finger and have the trainers just tape it up so you can get back in there. Have your OL pick you up and carry you because even though you can't walk, you still want to play. But soccer is essentially a sport played by 11 punters.

(And yes, I know soccer can get rough. But I'm talking about perception here.)
