He's saying outcome and course of action dictated by relationship
It is the same as when a worker walks out on a surpervisor. It is up to the worker to initiate contact, make amends, and work his way back to being part of the team. It doesn't reflect well on his capabilities that he didn't handle the formalities and paperwork of the exit properly. The supervisor may not want him back.
