Even today there are enough issues that it wouldn't work. How often does a football ref's wireless mic not work? Wireless clock toggles would be the same.

And again, since it's an historical part of the game now it's not one that anyone in the sport has any interest in changing. It's part of the sport's beauty and allure now.
