I wish I had an answer for you as to why UConn didn't go sooner. Had they gone 1A before Calhoun came to UConn, maybe we'd be a football school instead of basketball. I doubt it too, but we'd at least have twice as much 1A/FBS history as we do now.
I think at the time of that expansion, even if we were 1A it might not have mattered. I guess it depends on what the deciding factors were. BC was thought to give Boston and New England. In retrospect, they don't matter in Boston and definitely don't deliver New England. They certainly would have been the bigger named football school and their hoops certainly wasn't at the depths it's at now. Head to head they probably looked like the better choice. We had won a Men's BB NC at that point, so maybe Tobacco Road would have had more sway.
