Curious why this is a such a big deal

2 reasons....it shattered box office records, yet most horror movies do FAR less....why is this one such a big deal?

2nd reason (for me) is that I hadn't even heard of this movie until the thread on here last week, but that's more on me because I have a DVR and never watch commercials. But I was still surprised I hadn't heard anything on it.
