that's they key. You can't fund 500 academic scholarships and only offer them for athletes. You have to offer them to everyone. So Stanford basically gives everyone a big scholarship. According to their website they give a student $36k in financial aid if their family makes between $150k and $185k. So even then if an athlete comes from a family that makes good money it will only cost the sport a 50% athletic scholarship to give them a "full ride."

Check out the link for Stanford's financial assistance I've posted below. And because Stanford's Cost of Attendance is so high ($64k) a 50% scholarship will give a "full ride" to any athlete coming from a family that makes $185k. This is what I think gives Stanford such a leg up on equivalency sports.
