They use academic scholarships.


They can offer academic scholarships out of their endowment to add more scholarship money. $22.4 billion can keep 500 academic scholarships funded pretty good to be used for the athletes that pass the academic requirements for scholarships. They use the fully funded athletics scholarships allowed by the NCAA and then supplement with academic ones.

Stanford is a top 10 academic school in the world, so they can also entice recruits with that degree.

BTW, should the Ivy League decide they want to play, they have the resources to march right in there. There were articles a couple of years ago about the Ivy League wanting to raise their Athletic Profile and Visibility. They could pull right in there with Stanford with a desire to do it.
